Getting to Know one Another

For me, going to college was a completely new experience, and so was the experience of living with other people. I was an only child that was moving in with five other girls. Girls that I had no former background with. Girls that could have been crazy (I had recently watched Roommate before meeting them).

During orientation week my roommates and I found ourselves with one another quite often. We went to every freshman orientation event with one another. We sat in our room and learned about each others quirks so that there would be no surprise. To my pleasure I realized that none of my roommates seemed like potential sociopaths and that everything would be just fine when I went to rest my head at night.

In only the very first week, the girls helped the transition into college so much easier. The diversity that was located in just one bedroom was stunning. We were all quickly amazed with one another's passions for life. Four girls studying for business and another two in the college of Liberal Arts. Every individual in the room could speak at least one other language. There was a survivor from the earthquake in Haiti. Another few girls that were athletic.

I suppose that no one wanted to be sleeping with a stranger in their new house so we  placed the responsibility upon ourselves to play bonding games. The first of which we exposed some of our quirks to one another. Then we played a game similar to don't forget the lyrics. A time in which we learned that not a single one of us had the voice of an angel.

Shortly thereafter, we ordered take out because we weren't ready for our night to end. Which is why we collectively went to the first Men's soccer game of the season and bonded a little more. We sat and just talked for hours, the image below was our first sunset together. It was a wonderful experience.  Yet it was far from our last beautiful moment with one another.

In our very first week these five girls were able to make my part-time house a home. While it may not have been enough to call love, there was definitely a strong source of affection there. Enough so that I did feel entirely alone on such a huge campus. It was in that first week that I learned the people placed around you are placed there for a reason. If it weren't for them I'm not entirely sure of how I would've been able to deal with the pressures of a new environment. They were also my first experience of dealing with such diversity and because of that I was able to go through my first semester smoothly. Which is why I leave you with this piece of advice; "When placed into difficult. or seemingly difficult, situations take note that the people surrounding you have a great effect on how difficult the situation may actually be."

  1. Jamirah, I could totally relate to your fears of having a bad roommate, I think that's probably something that goes through the minds of most freshmen (I loved how you mentioned recently seeing Roommate). It's so great that you all ended up getting along so well, and I really liked how your post underscored the importance of having people to lean on in new/difficult situations.
